Minecraft Mods

Over the past year I’ve been using Modrinth as an alternative to CurseForge to obtain Minecraft mods.

They’ve had their own launcher for awhile now and the way their filter lets you easily differentiate between client/server mods is excellent.

I run a home java server and use mods such as Carpet, Bluemap, and this patch ‘Update 1.21 without trial chambers’ which is offered as a datapack or Fabric mod. The popular Minecraft SMP series Hermitcraft is currently using this mod in Season 10 and it has been great seeing them experiment with the new blocks and be able to do it myself without changing world generation yet.

I have tested removing the fabric version of the mod and the blocks do remain and the Redstone components still function however if you remove them they are destroyed. I will be providing another update after 1.21 is officially released to inform how this transitions over.

The last thing I’d like to mention about Modrinth is they really do their best to support their creators. As one of the few serious competitors to CurseForge it’s something nice to see. As their support page states

90% of the ad revenue from all pages goes directly to creators. The remaining 10% of ad revenue pay for Modrinth’s upkeep costs and allow us to continue to exist.

I have nothing against CurseForge and continue to use them for certain Minecraft mods and with other games, this article is just to highlight another site as competition is healthy especially when it comes to things like fair treatment of creators.
